Short Biography
Madeleine Bessen joined The Interface Group as a Postdoctoral Researcher in June 2025. Her primary research goals are to advance understanding of neurofluids and contribute to the development of tools for patient-specific management of neurological conditions. Madeleine focuses on interdisciplinary collaboration and seeks to build strong international networks to advance translational research in neuroscience.
Madeleine completed her PhD in Medicine at the University of Adelaide (South Australia, Australia) in May 2025, with her thesis titled “Towards the development of biomarkers for traumatic spinal cord injury: quantitative clinical imaging in a pre-clinical model to assess intrathecal morphology and cerebrospinal fluid flow”. During her PhD research and through collaborative projects, Madeleine gained experience in developing and conducting large animal experiments to investigate stenotic spinal cord pathologies and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. These studies integrated surgical techniques, medical imaging, including MRI and ultrasound, and physiological monitoring, such as intrathecal pressure measurements, to better understand disease progression and identify potential biomarkers.
At The Interface Group, Madeleine contributes to the development of non-invasive intracranial monitoring (e.g., for space-occupying neurological conditions such as hydrocephalus and intracranial haemorrhage), supporting efforts to better understand fundamental physiology and translate research into clinical practice.
